Sustainability on the Bus
Here is the list of Simple changes that have been employed on the bus to make it more Sustainable.
Waste Vegetable Oil as Fuel
The Simple Changes Tour Bus is a native Diesel engine that has had 2 75 gallon tanks, a pump, and a heating system added to allow it to run Waste Vegetable Oil.
No conversion has been done to the engine, as none is necessary. The original Diesel engine was designed to run on peanut oil, so as long as you filter out all the nasties that can damage an engine, you can run Waste Vegetable Oil in any diesel engine. VO needs to be heated to be able to combust the way that traditional fossil fuels need to, so the VO intake line is run through a re-routed engine coolant line that also flows through the heater, and through the VO tanks to ensure the VO is heated before it reaches the pump and lines. As VO will 'gum up' the works when it cools, the bus must be started and stopped with traditional diesel fuel, or bio-diesel fuel, which will ensure clean operation, as chemicals have been added to them to ensure it viscosity.
